Robert Dempsey was a horse whisperer. He had a trading post on theOregon Trail, and traded horses to people moving West. He was knownfor getting the good deal on trading his fresh horses to the WestwardHo people for horses who were worn out but great breeding stock. Heknew horses, and as a result of his trading horses, breeded Spokanefor the Kentucky Derby. Spokane was a Montana horse with Eastern USAroots who was very very fast.
